ALEXANDRIA — After 10 years as the head coach of the Alexandria boys soccer program, Brandon Johnson has made the difficult decision to step down.

Johnson announced his decision to step down from his position on Monday.

"After much thought and reflection, I have made the incredibly difficult decision to step down as head coach of the Alexandria Cardinals boys soccer team," Johnson said in a press release. "This program has been a part of my heart and soul for the past 10 years. Together, we’ve celebrated victories, grown through adversity, and built a culture I’m incredibly proud of — one centered around effort, accountability, and character. Being your coach has been one of the greatest honors of my life."

"This decision comes not from lack of love or commitment, but from the growing responsibilities in my personal and professional life that now require more of my time and focus. As hard as it is to step away, I know it’s the right time for both myself and the continued growth of the program."

According to MnSoccerHub, Johnson had a 71-71-20 career record coaching the Cardinals.

Johnson guided the Cardinals to five winning seasons, three of which came in the last four seasons.

"To the players, I say thank you for your effort, your trust, and your commitment," Johnson said. "Watching you grow on and off the field has been a gift I’ll carry with me forever. To the team famillies, I say thank you for your support, your encouragement, and for allowing me to be a part of your sons’ lives. This team will always be a part of me, and I’ll be cheering loudly from the stands or helping with the game from the center circle."

Assistant coach Phil Pham is stepping in as the interim head coach of the program.

"While I may no longer be on the sidelines, please know that I will always be your biggest fan and supporter," Johnson said. "Phil is a tremendous leader and mentor who has been part of this team’s foundation. He understands the culture, the expectations, and most importantly, the heart of this team. I have full confidence in his ability to lead you forward with integrity and passion."

Alexandria begins the 2025 season with a home battle against the St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
