Israeli universities are “trusted and important” research partners and “critical voices within society”, representative says
The head of a group of German universities has told Research Professional News that the group opposes Israel being frozen out of the EU’s research and innovation programme, as has been proposed by the European Commission as a response to the country’s actions in Gaza. The German government is reportedly one of the main obstacles to this proposal moving forward.
The Commission formally proposed to the EU governments last month that Israel, which has full association to the Horizon Europe R&I programme, should be suspended from taking part in its European Innovation Council Accelerator instrument. The EIC funds the development and commercialisation of breakthrough technologies, and the Accelerator scheme can fund projects with military potential, such as for drones or artificial intelligence, the Commission said.
