Something Lakers fans will have to get used to now and in the future is Luka Dončić playing competitive basketball during the summer. This year, he will be playing with the Slovenian national team in EuroBasket action.
The competition begins on August 27 and will end on September 14.
While we still have a few weeks before EuroBasket play begins, Slovenia will play a number of friendly games in the lead up to the tournament to prepare.
Those contests will begin this Friday with Slovenia playing Germany. While Luka is back with Slovenia fresh off his Jordan Brand USA media tour, don’t expect him to play heavy minutes in the friendly.
Slovenia will play in six friendly games prior to the start of EuroBasket. All of them will be available to watch on Courtside1891, though at a subscription cost. Here’s a look at their schedule for the upcoming exhibition games:
- When: Friday, August 8 at 11:15 a.m. PT
- Where: Stožice Arena in Ljubljana, Slovenia
- When: Sunday, August 10 at 8:30 a.m. PT
- Where: Manheim’s SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany
- When: Friday, August 15 at 9:30 a.m. PT
- Where: Siauliai Arena in Siauliai, Lithuania
- When: Saturday, August 16 at 9 a.m. PT
- Where: Xiaomi Arena in Riga, Latvia
Great Britain vs. Slovenia
- When: Tuesday, August 19 at 11 a.m. PT
- Where: Stožice Arena in Ljubljana, Slovenia
- When: Thursday, August 21 at 10 a.m. PT
- Where: Stark Arena in Belgrade, Serbia
It’s a bummer that we won’t see much of skinny Luka against Germany. However it’s wise for him to take it easy before EuroBasket begins. This will likely be similar to preseason action, where the starters get a couple of shifts and that’s about it.
Once EuroBasket begins, Luka will be fully unleashed and we’ll see what his new conditioning looks like in a competitive game.
Also, with so many friendlies on the schedule, there will be plenty of chances for Luka to get heavy minutes in some of these upcoming matchups. Still, considering these are the dog days of summer, it’ll be nice to get some men’s basketball to help bridge the gap between now and the start of Lakers training camp.
So, don’t expect much from Luka in this one. If he makes a couple of baskets, looks solid and comes out healthy, that’s all that really matters.
