Ronaldo’s iconic 2002 World Cup final haircut gets a new explanation two decades later

Trending 1 month ago

Ronaldo Nazario’s goals won Brazil the 2002 World Cup final, but his bizarre haircut ended up becoming one of the most talked about images of the tournament.

The small patch of hair at the front of his head quickly became iconic as Brazil beat Germany 2-0 in Yokohama.

More than two decades later, the hairstyle has suddenly returned to the spotlight after material from 2002 began circulating online.

The documents appear to suggest the look may have been linked to a marketing idea involving the Doritos brand.

Images shared online show documents supposedly dated from 2002 that reference Doritos alongside drawings of Ronaldo’s distinctive hairstyle in the World Cup final against Germany.

A Reddit user claimed he found those files in an auction. Between them there are sketches resembling advertising storyboards and outlining a potential television commercial built around the striker’s look.

The drawings suggest using Ronaldo’s haircut as a way to hint at the Doritos chips and their usual triangle form.

The discovery has prompted fans to wonder whether the hairstyle might have been part of a planned marketing stunt that was never aired.

Why the Doritos theory may not tell the full story

Ronaldo himself has not commented publicly since the documents began circulating online, leaving the theory largely driven by speculation. Without confirmation from the former striker, the real reason behind the haircut remains open to interpretation.

The ‘Phenomenon’ and fellow players over the years have suggested the hairstyle served a very different purpose.

Ronaldo has previously been linked to the idea that the haircut was meant to divert attention away from discussions about the 1998 World Cup final, when his seizure before the match became a defining storyline of Brazil’s defeat.

Some observers also believe the Doritos material could have been created after the tournament rather than before it. If that is the case, the campaign idea may simply have been an attempt to capitalise on a moment that had already captured worldwide attention.
